you know, i’ve gotten several of those, and though i’m somewhat thankful, it always strikes me as odd that people will do this!

I know what you mean. I posted a mailto: link on the 404 page to make it easier, but I’m always (pleasantly) surprised when people write.
Actually, I try to make a point of doing it myself but you often have to click away from the 404, find a contact link, and write - so I give up and don’t write.
The other day I was walking through Shibuya station and noticed that the fly of a man walking towards me was (quite obviously) undone. I began to veer towards him thinking that I would quietly mention it and be on my way (he was about to get on a crowded train and inevitable embarrassment awaited). But then I thought I might freak him out and suddenly the thought of ‘helping’ him out turned into a quandry.
I walked on.
