I Am Jack’s Abdominals
Big, beautiful, but not necessarily benign
smh.com.au
Ideal male bodies appear regularly in advertisements for aftershave, men’s fashion and a growing range of health and beauty products. Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis and (one-time Calvin Klein model) Mark Wahlberg are just a few Hollywood names keeping this ideal body shape in view.
Excuse me: Bruce Willis!?
The magazine [Men’s Health] rarely gets complaints from readers about unachievable ideals. Men’s Health was established here four years ago and has grown 10 per cent in circulation year on year. According to the last audit, it sold 44,600 copies. Its covers feature bare, big-chested men with flat stomachs and bulging biceps because of “market forces”, Ritchie says. When the magazine bucked this trend in July last year, with a cover featuring Paralympian John Maclean, whom Ritchie describes as fit and with a “good chest”, circulation suffered.
“Market forces.” I love that.
