Franzen wins National Book Award
By Hillel Italie
Franzen received a few boos as awards host Steve Martin read down the list of finalists, and the applause was polite when fiction judge Colin Harrison announced he had won. But after Franzen had concluded his speech, in which he thanked Winfrey for her “advocacy” of reading and called books “the most lovely things human beings make,” the response was warm and sustained.
In his opening monologue, Martin had teased Franzen, saying that instead of the Oprah show he would appear on “Martha Stewart’s Good Morning Wisconsin.’”
I’ve got a copy sitting here but haven’t started yet. Had a flick through to pick up some of the dialogue. Looks good. Just have to carve out some time to get started.

Turned out to be one of my favourite books of the year. My mother read it and thought it was pretty good (although she didn’t rave about it) but it didn’t seem to do a lot for my sister. I think she bailed half way through despite my admonition to keep going.
I recently ordered his latest book, a collection of essays, and am waiting for it to arrive. Very curious to see what the next novel will be like.
