Australian Wine
The New York Times has an article by Aurelia Scott on Australian Wines That Travel Well (and Far)
Scott concentrates on the Barossa Valley region in South Australia, but there are some astounding (and cheap) wines coming out of Western Australia these days.
Will Nairn at the Peel Estate Winery has been dominating award shows for years with his Shiraz. His Cabernet Sauvignon is remarkable, too.
Moondah Brook, north-east of Perth does a ridiculously under-priced Cab Sav that’s just great.
If you prefer white wine, Goundrey’s does an unwooded Chardonnay which is supposed to be superb (and it was great, although I don’t like whites in general).
If you’re very lucky, you might even get to try something from Henschke (not Western Australian, but we can forgive them for that). You’ll probably never be fortunate enough to taste their Hill of Grace Shiraz (extremely hard to find and damned expensive these days - I’ve never had it!) but the Mount Edleston Shiraz is not too hard to find, and very good when you do:
Very deep crimson in colour. Aromatic blackberries and plums with anise, black pepper, tar and ferns. Rich and concentrated, the palate shows fruit, spice, velvety tannins and excellent structure and length.
Damn straight!
