How Much to Be a Doctor?
Teikyo med school may have asked for preadmission bribes
Daily Yomiuri On-Line
The Education, Science and Technology Ministry said Wednesday it would launch an investigation into the Teikyo University School of Medicine in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, concerning the allegation that parents of some candidates were asked to make contributions to the school in order for their children to be accepted.
There are few things more scary than Japanese doctors. Years ago, when I was teaching, one of my students (a particularly slow-witted young man) was in med school. He came into class looking very depressed one day.
Turns out he had failed his final exams and his father was understandably furious with him because this necessitated a large ‘donation’ to the school in order that the son’s results be, er… reviewed.
He told me this without a hint of shame, as if it were the most natural thing in the world (which actually seems to be the case).
