Australian pretty-boy actor Heath Ledger will apparently play the role of Ned Kelly in a new film based on Robert Drewe’s novel Our Sunshine (an OK interview with Drewe is here). This will be the latest in a long line of Kelly films (check out Mick Jagger as Kelly — he’s never looked better though the film stank).
Neil Jordan is supposed to be directing yet another Kelly film based on Peter Carey’s novel True History of the Kelly Gang which won this year’s Booker Prize. The disturbing thing about this is that Brad Pitt is slated to play Kelly, to which the only natural response is, “Nooooo!”.
I have, or at least had, something of a vested interest in the Carey novel, having been assistant to the Japanese translator for two of his previous novels. The Kelly novel is his best (although Illywhacker is really something special) but we lost the project to a large publisher here that looks set to bring in their own translator (an extremely dumb move — our translation of Jack Maggs was named one of the three best novels of last year by the Asahi Shinbun’s book critic).
