Today’s Leaf: Bamboo

Continuing in our day-late leaf series, here’s another something from the garden: bamboo (no surprises today). Turns out that the secret to happy bamboo is to leave it alone. Splash a bit of water on it now and then and otherwise ignore it. This one didn’t come good until I pretended that it didn’t exist. We probably all know people like that.
Osamu Dazai wrote a book called Blue Bamboo which was translated by Ralph McCarthy. It’s worth a look, although I think McCarthy’s other Dazai translation, Self Portraits, is even better.

So, my happy bamboo has lived beautifully on my kitchen counter in water for the past year. Its leaves have multiplied and they looked wonderful. Over the past several weeks, two of them have turned albino - white! Can anyone make a suggestion? I haven’t moved them or done anything different.
Thanks, Geri gbdrexler@attbi.com
