We wrap up Leaf Week with the autumn leaf nonpareil: momiji, or the Japanese maple.

These things just go off this time of year, running the gamut of autumn colours from bright oranges to the most intense reds. They’re almost a little too ostentatious in their showy shutdown for the winter, but you have to appreciate the way they make a go of it. I don’t shut down for the winter with anything like the same elan.
