35 Accused of Using Babies to Run Drugs

Federal officials on Friday announced indictments involving a drug ring in which babies were used as cover, some of them rented to smugglers.
The Justice Department said 35 people involved in running drugs from Panama to the United States from 1996 to 1999 had been charged with importing and exporting drugs. The ring used baby-carrying young women as couriers and placed cocaine and heroin in baby formula cans.
Among those indicted were some parents, who were allegedly paid for allowing their babies to be used as cover for the couriers in exchange for money.
One of the infants was three weeks old when it was first rented to couriers.
