Podded

My search for a portable mp3 player has ended: I’m podded.
I’m also pretty damned impressed. An mp3 player with an emergency startup disk and utilities on it is my idea of sweet music. The sound is wonderful, iTunes integration is great, and I could get stuck on a train for 4 days without having to listen to the same thing twice.
As with most rash, big-ticket impulse purchases, it’s a longish story.
A few days ago I installed more RAM into the Pismo after finding a cheap 512MB board. I wanted to put it in the lower slot to keep the 256MB board I’d already put in the top. No problem, I thought, I’ll just do it myself. It’s not like I have a warranty to worry about anymore (famous last words).
I took out the processor card, installed the RAM and, of course, the thing wouldn’t restart. Had to take the machine into the shop only to watch the guy take it apart again, give the card a mighty push, reassemble it and then start it without a hitch.
I’ve taken PowerBooks apart since the 160, and thought that once you’d gotten past the terrible cracking sound the old grey ones used to make when you pried the cover off, you could get past anything—especially mustering the courage to give the processor card a good thump. I was wrong. Anyway, I was so filled with relief that I didn’t have a major hardware failure on my hands that I stupidly stopped by another store on the way home. It was there that I saw the iPod in the flesh for the first time.
About a minute after picking it up and putting it through some paces I was on my way to the bank to get money I didn’t have (but what’s a little deeper on the red when you’re in love?). Now that I’m back riding trains again, it’s good to be able to listen to music, and the iPod makes it a real pleasure in a bunch of ways.

Man, I’m green with envy.
When I bought my iBook a few weeks ago, I was so proud that I held off and didn’t buy an iPod. But I swear it calls to me.
Have fun with it.

Congrats! I truly LOVE mine. We have a lot of music loaded into it and I’m looking forward to travelling with no piles of CD’s etc. Gonna replace my car stereo with one I can hook the iPod into as well. Very very cool.
If you remember, I work in an Apple store and it’s bringing a lot of PC users into the place to look at the iPods. Most are amazed by the design.
PS - I also own a Pismo and replaced the memory in the lower slot and it took two of us (hubby and I) and a lot of pushing to get that sucker in there.

Congrats on the new iBook. I have a feeling that once iTunes has become your default mp3 player (should happen surprisingly easily), you’ll start looking at the iPod with a renewed sense of product-lust and your pride will fly out the window (along with a not inconsiderable amount of money ;-).

Welcome back! I gave that processor card all I was prepared to give - but it still wasn’t enough. The guy in the shop really leaned up over it and pushed it down hard… I was already wincing at the sound of splintering plastic but it never came.
I’ve been showing the iPod to non-Mac friends and, yes, the level of interest is high. Not sure I’ve made any converts yet, but the seeds have been planted!
