Say It With Me: Spec, Spec, Spec
One of the interesting things about starting a new job is going into an environment where things don’t necessarily happen the way you’re used to, and consequently having to negotiate multiple sets of expectations which may or may not be clear.
“Spec, spec, spec” is something of a work mantra of mine (another one being “coffee, coffee, coffee”). If it’s not written down, it’s not real. All those old organisational clichés turn out to be true, of course: better to spend some time now specifying things properly than way more time later trying to figure out what’s what. If you’re delivering work to clients it strikes me that at least 50% of what you should be doing is producing the best documentation you can.
Not doing so is the equivalent of a builder building you a house and then not providing any keys.
