Eating Whales

‘Cruel’ citizens demand bite of beached whales
Mainichi Interactive

OURA, Kagoshima – Local authorities here have been flooded with calls from citizens demanding the right to eat 13 sperm whales that beached and died here during the week, the Mainichi learned Saturday.

Some Oura residents have turned up with chainsaws at the seaside area where the whales beached in the hope of cutting off some whale meat, which is regarded as a delicacy in Japan.

Almost anywhere else, people would flock to the area to try to save the whales. But let’s say that they were already dead (the story doesn’t make this clear); should the locals be allowed to eat them? Part of me says sure: it’s way too much like eating roadkill for my taste (and I wouldn’t eat whale on principle anyway) but if you’re that kind of person, tuck right in.

But a louder voice says nothing; just sighs with disgust and leaves the conversation. It’s this voice I’m listening to.

Assuming that the whales are dead, eating them seems to be the practical thing to do. Why let all that good food go to waste? What. They should just let the whales lie on the beach and rot? Now that, to me, is a disgusting thought.

I guess I’m just plain conflicted about this whole situation. Reading your comment, I completely agree. I think the justifications that I occasionally hear about why the locals “have a right” to eat whale, &c., throw up some sort of barrier in my mind that I can’t really negotiate.

It probably is as simple as hunting them is bad, finding them dead on a beach is good.

Hello,

I, Brad Marsh and one Mr Timothy Perkins are intrested in farming whales. Does anyone know where we can find cheap calves to purchase for our farms.

Thanks for your time
