I vowed today that I will never again buy any clothing that is ‘in fashion.’ I spent most of the day cleaning closets and dealing with old clothes; sorting out those that can be recycled versus those for which there is no hope. I stirred up dust, I sneezed a lot, and I learned that our closets hold dark secrets.

You wouldn’t believe some of the things I bought over the years. Not many things, mind you, but just pair of pants or two and a shirt here and there that made me say, what were you thinking!? Not even Spandau Ballet in the depths of their New Romantic tastelessness would have worn a particular pair of Yohji Yamamoto pants I somehow acquired back in the early ’90s.

These things weren’t even really pants; they were pantaloons, like something out of the Commedia del’Arte. I kept them… for historical interest. And because each generation must provide fodder for their own future humiliation before children and grandchildren who will one day disappear into cupboards and closets, emerge bright-eyed and snickering and say, “Grandpa! Did you really wear these?”

Followed by “Can I borrow it?” One generation’s archive is the next generation’s retro fashion. It was pretty weird visiting my son’s high school in the 90s. All the girls looked they arrived straight out of the 70s. Thankfully the 80s had disappeared. (Until now…a curse FOX for “That 80s show”.)

Perish the thought! You’re right though; there’s no telling what’s going to be cool when the time comes.

My parents had tons of ’70s Adidas clothing (they both played squash competitively) but they threw it all out so of course when it became fashionable again my brother was furious.

I’m thanking my lucky stars I haven’t ever seen “That 80s Show” - sounds about more than I could bear. I turned 13 in 1980 and as you probably well know, the ’80s was a shit of a decade in which to have to spend your teens!
