I recall reading once that Einstein got about 13 hours a night - and he was a babe magnet! Margaret Thatcher on the other hand got by with very few hours sleep. Starting to get the picture? ;-)
This story is getting a lot of attention since it came out but I can’t help feel it’s rubbish. There’s just too much individual variation to come up with a figure of 6 or 7 hours (anything less than 8 and I’m a bear with a sore head). What I think probably could be determined is that sleeping too much beyond or beneath your regular requirement is not so good, but as to what consitutes that personal requirement is going to be subject to some wild latitide.
