Seems Like Old Times
How happy am I?
I just got back from dinner with a bunch of friends who I haven’t seen for, on average, about four years. What a wonderful evening.
Some people live here, but we’d lost touch through busy-ness and the neglect it so easily engenders. One person was visiting and is leaving tomorrow, some got back recently from elsewhere, and some were absent but we drank to them and talked of them and wished they were there. One is leaving for Italy tomorrow, one arrived back today in love, looking wonderful, and talking a jet-lagged wild streak. One just got funding to finish his thesis in peace (unless the Fulbright edges that out), and one is getting married in the summer. It was a big, fat, sentimental kind of evening, the kind that pushes a certain reset button in your life for which you are all the better.
James, Jeff, May, Kevyn, Osamu, Kazuko, Kia, Wes, Jason, Steve, Justin - hello, welcome, goodbye, wish you were here, and, above all, thank you.
