Bye Bye Mobile Phone
Comments: 2
Instead of carrying a small phone in my pocket I now carry a big mountain. Let me explain.
I no longer have a mobile phone. This feels good.
The phone I’d been using was graciously provided by my previous company. After way too generous an amount of time, they let the contract lapse and I am now sans keitai (keitai meaning portable phone in Japanese). What made me decide not to replace it was my ski trip of a few weeks ago. I saw many people, more than a few of them just standing there in the middle of a run, talking away on their mobiles. We were in the mountains, remember, which I always look at as a chance to escape and clear the head and hit that reset button that’s so often out of reach (and people have looked at mountains this way for a long time ;-) and these people seemed unwilling or unable to step away from phone.
I don’t want to be like that. Ever.
Part of the allure of getting away is just that - to get away. Being unreachable is a concept on the verge of extinction, and if we can speak of biodiversity, then we can certainly speak of psychodiversity (where monocultures are an equally bad thing). I decided to start a little nature reserve in my head right then and there.
Now I’ve known people who have been rescued from some hairy situations by dint of the fact that they were packing mobiles, but my feeling has become that you shouldn’t go in if you can’t get out, and if you can’t get out, well, perhaps that’s nature’s way of saying, “Goodbye and thanks for playing.”

Here here! For the few times I've wished for a cell phone, most of the time if I really need to make a call, there's a real phone somewhere - a store, a payphone etc. Geesh. Sometimes I think someone is talking to ME and instead they're talking to their phone. This mismatch is magnified now that you can't talk on a cell phone and drive unless you're using a headset or voice-activated. So people now walk around with their **headsets** on. Is that just too cool or what?
How bleeding self-important is that? Can't be out of touch cuz I'm way too important.
Sorry. Stepping off soapbox now.
