Chewing Gum Improves Memory (!)
Priceless!
New Scientist
Chewing gum can improve memory, say UK psychologists. They found that people who chewed throughout tests of both long-term and short-term memory produced significantly better scores than people who did not. But gum-chewing did not boost memory-linked reaction times, used as a measure of attention.

I find that I can only get work done if I come in on the weekends, and well, that suks!

It’s nuts, isn’t it. People do that at my place. I’ve been bringing work home over the weekend in order to get things done but was recently told that if I needed to work over the weekend I really ought to come into the office so I could clock in and clock out (it wasn’t an issue of trust, I was to understand; just that it made tracking hours easier).
Well, guess that means no more working on weekends, which of course is just fine with me. The separation of church and state, let’s call it. Pray at the alter of capitalism during work hours and let the democracy of the senses reign at all other times. Yes, indeed.
The other thing that people do, and I’ve noticed this at several companies, is to put on headphones as a kind of “Do Not Disturb” signal. People have even been known to listen to music while wearing their headphones, but this is apparently optional.
Nothing says “stay the hell away” quite like a pair of headphones. I’m learning fast.

Do chew very quietly and keep your mouth closed!
It is very fascinating to know this, thank you. However, I disagree with the fact that gum chewing should be allowed in class. It disrupts students, causes danger to young children..(choking, swallowing) and effects school property. It might refresh one’s memory, but there are plenty more reasons much more logical and evidential that proves an inportant point against gum chewing in class being allowed.
I chew gum at my college and nobody cares. But i guess it was different in highschool and middle school. But through my experience ive learned 2 things about chewing gum helps me concintrate better and in collage u no that the teachers are smoking blunts so they sure dont give a fuck about chewing some harmless gum…

The danger is that you remember too much.

Chewing gum does nothing other than keep you more awake. It is not good to eat it all the time, but the manufacturers want you to beleive it is. It overstimulates the saliva glands and can lead to deterioration of your stomach lining due to excessive reflux acid. It disturbs other people as most chewers have no concept of quiet chewing, so it actually reduces others concerntration levels. It is also responsible for all the black dots on the sdewalks!

it is like when ur at the movies, u need something to chew on to stay focused and in class, most students feel the same. gum gives your body motion while you are listening to a speaker. This would also help because students wouldnt get antsy easily. Gum also keeps your breath smelling good which helps you to keep friends. thanks and i hope you make chewing gum a thing that students should be able to DO!

I don’t know what these comments say about the state of science, social studies, and English education —- I suspect someone’s got a nice running gag going, which is how I’ve been reading them —- but I do get a kick out of imagining the faces of exasperated teachers confronted with the article.
The continuous stream of thanks from gum-chewing middle school students, while appreciated, has become bubble-liciously overwhelming, so let’s leave these comments on the bedpost (we can see how the flavour holds up over time).
