In Search of the Perfect (But Affordable) Headphones
Comments: 2
At MacWorld Tokyo every machine in the Apple booth sported a pair of headphones (as befits a digital hub, I guess). They’re visible in this shot I took. I put a pair on to listen to what was on the display iPods and despite the crappy music selection was just astounded by quality of the things.
Turns out they were Bose noise-cancelling headphones retailing at just under $300 a pair! Now, I have no connnection to Bose, but I’d have to say they’re worth every penny. The downside is that they have a little amp thingy attached to them, which makes carrying them around something of a hassle.
The Etymotic Research ER-4P internal ‘phones, on the other hand, require no such attachment and apparently are just as good at the noise cancellation business. They seem to have developed a reputation as just about the best headphones on the planet.
Just dreaming, I guess. It’s not like I have in excess of $300 to spend on headphones. The old Audio-Technica TH-350AV’s are plenty good enough for the likes of me (at least for now ;-).

Try the Sony Fontopia range. I am very happy with the $50 MDR-EX70LP. If you really want noise cancelation they have a $200 pair.
