Spring

No matter how screwed up things are, and I realise I’m about to sound very corny here, the miracle of spring always seems to put things into a better perspective.

Things are just bursting out all over here and it’s very hard to take your troubles too seriously when there’s so much vegetative exuberance to be seen. I may just be looking for an easy way out but, hey, I’ll take anything right now.

The cherry trees are entering the most poignant part of their brief annual wingding. The leaves are starting to appear and the flowers are just raining down in spectacular death throes of pinkness. People are walking around with cherry petals in their hair and on their clothing and they don’t know it. I’ve had a couple fall off me as I step onto the train or walk into the office.

The avenue of zelkova trees near the video store is growing its new crop of leaves quite nicely, which is always good to see. In a couple of months it will be stinking hot here and these trees are real friends during the worst of the summer.

New green leaves are everywhere, reaching up to the sky like little vegetable babies. For hundreds of thousands of years, new green leaves have been everywhere this time of year. I’m always glad when nature forgives us for another year and we get one more spring. It’s a sign that we haven’t completely fucked things up yet.
