No End to the Big News This Week

It’s been a week for big news alright. I’m now jobless. The company couldn’t afford to make good on it’s salary arrangement with me (what, with its major clients walking out the door) so it’s no job for Jeremy. I’m so relieved. I’d been worried since the day I started and thinking of leaving for some time. It took the president and I about 5 minutes to come to a mutual understanding!
We’re talking about a company where designers have to supply their own software and hardware. I really do wish everyone there the very best of luck, but the company really has to get a clue if it thinks it’s going to weather the stormy seas of the Japanese economy, where the attractions of the past can be as Sirens’ song to the less determined navigator.
I don’t know what I’m going to do know. I’m thinking of either packing the rucksack and going climbing in the mountains to find some hot springs, or packing the rucksack and heading south to my favourite island and its hot springs. Given the way it’s been warming up here, the island’s looking like the favourite.

I did hear a good radio interview this morning by a man purportedly from an institute in Europe about the “Perverted Pyramid Diet” espousing vast quantities of saturated fats and cigs. Title of the book? “Fat, Schmat! Embrace a RingDing.” Not available at a bookstore near you.

Congrats and condolences. We should start a club.

Sounds like congrats and condolences to you, too, James. Best o’ luck.
I’d been mentioning to my wife that I might leave if the company didn’t start to look more promising, and when I called her Friday to tell her the, um, good news, the first thing she said was, “Congratulations!”
Best to try to look at these things positively - not least because it means I won’t be around for the final death throes in, oh, about 6 months time. ;-)

“Getting fired or not getting fired: which would be worse?” I received a card once with that greeting and I’ve spent many a tense day at work since wondering what the answer was. Finally, I got laid off with thousands of other high tech workers in Austin (Texas) last summer.
One certainly experiences a wide range of emotions: relief, worry, joy, loneliness. I’m trying my best to take advantage of the opportunity. So far the only downside, for me, is the lack of daily social interaction. I also miss working on a team to get out a project.
Sorry to ramble on. What I’m trying to say is that I hope you are able to enjoy yourself a bit until you find another (I’m sure much better!) form of employment. Best of luck.
