Extremely Tidy Desktop
I’ve turned off the Desktop to test whether a recent tip on MacOSXHints works; that doing this results in faster window redraws and a snappier feel. You can use the indispensible TinkerTool to disable the Desktop.
Things seem noticeably faster, although I get a shock every time I close windows and there’s nothing there. Not sure if this is going to be worth it, though, as I use the Desktop a lot and going through a Finder window to ~/Desktop/ isn’t really cutting it for me.
