Style Sheet Updates & Caching

Scott at www.darklemon.com wrote to tell me about some style sheet monkey business you may have noticed.

I made some small changes to the sheets so that they would validate. This involved nothing more than adding background colors to some elements (that the cascade, by the way, suggests should be inherited from parent elements – I think I was pandering to a possible bug in the validator ;-). The problem is in the way that browsers cache style sheets; they don’t always abandon their obviously cherished memories of the old ones.

Internet Explorer seems to have to be shutdown and restarted before it realises the CSS has changed, and Mozilla takes its sweet time, too.

Apologies for any sheetless page views you may have suffered recently. Things should be even better than normal now.

I share your pain about these annoying virii — Twice this week I’ve gotten so many of them sent my way that I’ve had to have my ISP go in and delete anything with an attachment over 120K. Now, I ask - why isn’t the ISP filtering this stuff? geesh. So annoying when you have a mac and purely a bandwidth issue. If it’s not the virus-laden messages themselves clogging things up, it’s the foolish windows users clogging up the email lists asking if anyone else got it, what IS it?, what they had to do to fix it blah blah yadda yadda.

The hammering from the Klez is only getting worse. There’s a special place in hell waiting for the person who unleashed this!

The other thing that really gets my goat is well-intentioned virus warnings from neophyte friends (generally regarding hoaxes, of course). I make a point these days when helping friends set up systems of telling them two things: never respond to spam and never send or forward virus warnings.

But this is a minor irritation compared with what we’re all going through at the moment.

I’m encountering the same problem. My app can update its own style sheet, but it is not reloaded until several minutes later sometimes. I believe the only fix to this is to rename the stylesheet and change the href link in the page to point to the new file. The browser can’t cache what it’s never loaded!
