Left & Right, North & South

It’s a little-known fact that I mix up left and right on an occasional, but nonetheless alarming, basis.

Another annoying lapse in synaptical élan occurs – and occured yet again last night in fact, this after more than decade in the northern hemisphere – when, coming out of some station squinting into daylight or neon, grafting the carefully gleaned mental image of the street map from which I extracted the sought-for address (carried from home to destination in the chilled cooler bag of my rushed little memory like a donated organ ambulanced between hospitals) onto the uncooperative urban actualities sprawled before me, I find myself struck with what we can call galloping antipodeanism: 180° disoriention north and south.

You can take the boy out of the southern hemisphere…

I must of gleaned over this post previously, however looking at it a second time, I realised (10 or so years after that fact) how disorientated I was when looking at maps in Europe. More often than not, I found myself going in the opposite direction. Does residing in the opposite hemisphere actually effect your sense of direction?

Scott, it’s my experience that it does. When I was in New Zealand and discussing this with a local he told me that recently there were reports of unscrupulous real estate agents in that country trying to sell houses with “wonderful southern exposures!”

It took me a while to reorient myself while in the southern hemisphere. However, I had a more major problem when I first visited Japan. Having grown up on the “eastern” shore of the Pacific (L.A.), I became amazingly mixed up when it came to east-west directions in Nihon. To me, the Pacific was always West.
