This is just heartbreaking. The Sesame Street Workshop can only be applauded for doing this (assuming they do it right, of course), but what a tragedy that it happens in the first place.
Sesame Street to Introduce HIV-Positive Muppet
Bernie Woodall, ReutersNEW YORK (Reuters) - Sesame Street will soon introduce its first HIV-positive Muppet character to children of South Africa, where one in nine people have the virus that can lead to AIDS.
The upbeat female Muppet will join “Takalani Sesame” on Sept. 30 for its third season on the South African Broadcasting Corp.
I hope I’m not guilty of adding to a general desenitization of the horror by trotting out more grim figures, but the last paragraph of the story says
In some parts of South Africa, 40 percent of women of child-bearing age are infected with HIV, and in 2000, about 40 percent of adult deaths in South Africa were attributed to AIDS, according to the State Department.
40 percent! And South Africa is by no means the worst afflicted country. I wish I had a god to pray to.
