The Opiate of the Masses Just Got a New Syringe
If I watched TV, I’d want one of these. It’s like a Tivo for your Macintosh.
Of course, what I’d prefer is something worth watching in the first place…
Which reminds me of a story about Jerome Weisner, former president of MIT and science advisor to John F. Kennedy. Weisner, who I think had done work on signal processing that was instrumental in the development of television, was being shown around the White House. He meets Kennedy, who on being told of Weisner’s involvement in TV says, “Wow – so you helped develop TV! That’s wonderful. You must be very proud.” and Weisner replies, “Well, I don’t know. Have you seen television lately?”
Another great quote from Weisner, especially apt with the current U.S. administration:
It is no longer a question of controlling a military-industrial complex, but of keeping the United States from becoming a totally military culture.
Too late, much too late. The poor guy must be rolling in his grave.
