Thin Pills?

Fatproof drug revealed
smh.com.au

US researchers have found that suppressing a particular gene allowed mice to eat fatty foods without gaining weight or risking diabetes, according to a study to be published today.

Such a modern solution! Don’t change your habits at all, just pop a pill. I know there are plenty of people who are obese through some ‘medical’ condition or other and that this could be a real help to them, but something like 60% of people in the US are overweight and 20% are obese and the vast majority are that way because they eat crap, and lots of it. Australians are heading in this direction, too. I was amazed the last time I was back to see so many fat people. Casual observation suggested a big increase although I don’t have figures to back it up.

I know what you mean. It’s getting worse here in England too. More and more people look like they’re wearing stockings full of dead rabbits.

I myself am slightly overweight; at 5ft6 I’m a bit too heavy weighing in at 79kg, but I’m working hard to lose it. Not all of it, but enough so I can go back to making disparaging comments about the obese.

Till then I’ll just save them up and keep them in a jar.

Hi, Christopher, and welcome.

There’s a big difference between overweight and obese, of course, and I didn’t mean to come on like the Fat Police with this post. It’s natural to tend to carry a bit more weight than we’d like (evolution preparing us for the lean times by giving us a little extra fuel). I was really talking about the far end of the spectrum. ;-)

Height to weight ratios don’t really mean anything. Are you a scrawny 5’6” or a brawnier 5’6”? All depends on your frame whether 79kg is too much or not. At 6’ I’m a couple of inches taller than my Dad and weigh in at 68kg. He weighs closer to 100 but there’s not a whole lot of fat on him. I got my morphology from my mother’s side of the family and have to work hard to gain weight. I know people who started working out and a month later they look like the Incredible Hulk. I started out looking like Pee Wee Herman on diet pills and after 18 months of fairly serious exercise I’m still less than 70kg. Disappointment can be found at either extreme.

I’m diabetic and would love to reduce weight by use of medication.

I don’t the drugs to be a permanent thing - just get me to the right weight so that I can then maintain it by diet thereafter. Every day I am overweight causes more damage to my system.

For me, this would be a good thing
