A Pilsener Runs Through It
![]()
We spent a couple of days camping west of Tokyo in an area called Oku-Tama for what passed as our summer holiday this year. Good to get away for a litle while at least. The days were hot, the nights were cool, the shiitake mushrooms were delicious and the river was fast. I threw myself at its mercy but received none, getting for my troubles a few nasty whacks from hidden rocks as I was carried downstream at a serious clip towards the rapids. Great way to spend an afternoon! Jump in, get whooshed along, walk back along the bank, jump in again.
I discovered Tama no Megumi, a local brewery, and tried their pilsener (which you can see above cooling in the shallows of the river). Very good, if a little bit textbookish. They also make a pale ale and a darker beer, which I didn’t try, unfortunately.
