Books on Japanese Houses < Home > Behave

House Week

Next week is going to be House Week on Antipixel (in the spirit of last year’s Leaf Week). I’ll be posting a series of photographs of various houses in my neighbourhood (the good, the bad, and the butt-ugly) so we can give this old house kick I’m on a damned good working out.

I’m definitely looking forward to ‘Japanese House Week’, for years I’ve admired these stylings, but I’ve never had much to go on, and now having discovered your site only yesterday, you’ve already pointed me to a few wonderful resources!

Hi, Ryan, and welcome.

My apologies for your double post; I suspect you got the internal server error (#500) and posted again (the trouble is that posts usually go through OK the first time, despite the error). This seems to be happening a bit lately. I’m not sure why yet. I also haven’t implemented the comment preview function and this is just pure laziness on my part. It’s coming.

I haven’t figured out exactly what I’ll photograph next week. One of the problems is that Japanese houses are generally not very visible from the street. They’re usually surrounded by high walls which make ‘browsing’ difficult. I’ll try to get some shots which show the decline of the art form in all its gruesome detail and hopefully won’t get too maudlin on you. ;-)

I really hope the situation hasn’t gotten too bad over in Nagano. I’ll be moving there to live in about three weeks’ time (I’ll be doing the typical graduate thing of teaching English - and teach them good I will, good like what I do!).

I suppose it’s what you get when people know the value of fashion but not culture, gold but not heritage.
