Niggardly Indeed

I can’t believe how stupid this is.
Parent offended by lesson in vocabulary
Sherry Jones, Willmington Star (via Kuro5hin)Use of a word that sounds like a racial slur has landed a New Hanover County teacher in the middle of a controversy.
Stephanie Bell, a fourth-grade teacher at Williams Elementary School, taught the word “niggardly” to her class last week in an effort to improve her students’ vocabularies.
Now, a parent wants her fired.
Unbelievable. Talk about short-changing your child.

There is very little that pisses me off more than shit-stupid parents who can’t be bothered to acquire a passing familiarity with the English lexicon outside of what’s needed to understand monster truck commentary and soap opera dialogue. Just because a person is to stupid to understand the etymology of a word doesn’t make the word offensive, it makes that dumbass’s opinion offensive.
My little brother asked me if this means that soon we’ll have to stop talking about kites (sounds too much like kike). What do you say to that?

I agree with the sentiment of Erynn, but I hope he isn’t advocating we all live up to his own high standard of vocabulary use.
