Thorpe’s New Coach
Comments: 11
Ian Thorpe has a new coach, which is big news if you follow swimming. To say that Tracey Menzies has a tough job ahead of her is something of an understatement.
Thorpe - the woman behind the man
Sydney Morning HeraldTracey Menzies, 29, is an art teacher at East Hills Boys High – Thorpe’s former school – and his former “learn to swim” coach. She’s also a former pupil and assistant of Doug Frost, the man who moulded Thorpe into the record-breaking athlete he is today.
She is now the person who must coach – more apt would be “finetune” – arguably the greatest swimmer of all time. It may well be the best job ever: a chance to become a part of the career of a swimming megastar, an Australian icon.
Or it may turn out to be the worst: if Thorpe’s times improve, well, that’s to be expected. If they don’t, then she’s “ruined” the best swimmer to ever pull on Lycra.
This is going to be interesting.

d — There was another story in the SMH a few days after this one (which they want to charge me to retrieve, so no link sorry) which was basically an interview with Frost on the split with Thorpe.
The astonishing thing was that Frost wasn’t paid at all for coaching Thorpe! Now to a certain level, this is understandable, but for a couple of years Thorpe (with more money than God) has been pretty much the best swimmer in the world. I would have thought Frost was getting at least a little something for his efforts.
There’s talk about him doing some coaching in Japan. If he makes it up here, I’m definitely going to try to get in touch, at least to buy him a beer and shake his hand!

i used 2 have tracy as a coach and i would have 2 say that she is one of the best coaches ever and does not deserve any ridicule or bad judgements by people shes also a great women with great initiative and i hate how she is being discriminated against now being the only women coach in the Australian side. It’s deplorable. She’s a great coach and a wonderful person who should be acknowledged for every acheivement she’s made and every swimmer she has taught.

Tracey,
I am a retired Masters Swim Coach and know only too well, the hard journey you have as a top coach in a mans world. Congratulations on the job you are doing, not ony with Ian, but with your other charges. Also, congratulations on the birth of your baby. More people should look at themselves in the mirror before they ridicule other people. Good luck and keep doing such a great job……

I understand Ian has glandular fever or ongoing symptoms. My daughter had this and I was told there is nothing you can do, so I researched and found a cure. It’s from a naturopath and works. I wouldn’t have believed it had I not seen it for myself, so I would like you to contact me as I know I can help. I really want to see Thorpy back at his best and know how he must be feeling. Alady at work also had this and I told her about the remedy and she is also proof it works. My daughter has not had any relapses and this has now been 9 years. Yours sincerely, Fiona.

I am a psychopharmacologist/nutritional psychologist who until now has simply been a bystander picking up snippets about Ian’s issues with regard to glandular fever. As a registered pharmacist too, I am aware that CMV or EBV will stay in one’s system unless a specialised approach is taken. This can be attested to I’m sure by fellow swimmers in Nadine and Lynley.
The point is, several of my patients (using natural means only) have now overcome chronic fatigue syndrome or ME which is derived in many cases through a combination of 2 incidents that merge together at the same time.
1) Affliction with CMV but especially EBV type glandular fever and,
2) Candidiasis which can be worsened by chlorine in the pool.
If you wish to speak to me further or even the past president of CFS Hawkesbury Support group where I was a keynote speaker with Dr Bill Vader, let me know asap.
Yours Sincerely, Terry Tung-Yep Ph 0416214699 Clinic Tues/Thur 47214699 Clinic Fri 95580049 Home Mon & Wed 47518585

I’m just a Mum - not very sporty but I have admired Ian for many years as a charming, honest, hardworking and modest young man. This lovely young man has done us proud and now has the right to look after himself and follow his next dream. I wish him joy and peace in his new direction…Love, Alison

I am a strength athlete aged 35 and have glandular fever! Please help!! I aim to be back in training (usually follow heavy weights program 3-4 days per week); the mind is willing but the flesh is weak. I have stayed away from any physical exercise for 7 weeks now but still feel particularly low and depleted energy. Can Fiona or anybody else help out with regards to treatment/supplements. In much appreciation. urban.mystic@hotmail.com
