This really is an interesting discovery; it is reminiscent of ancient Greek use of the golden ratio in architecture. (The medial section, and its cousin, the Voronoi diagram, happen to be valuable tools in the field of path planning, which involves algorithms that help compute a navigable path (example: a robot) through a field of obstacles. I wonder if the appeal of the pattern in the garden’s medial axis relates to some subliminal human urge to draw mental maps of obstacle-filled spaces, and that in this case the unconscious map we make has an appealing tree shape!)
