Canon Help Desk Recording
Comments: 22
A friend sent me this alleged recording of a call to the Canon help desk which I haven’t found floating around anywhere else. Good for a laugh. The caller gets a B- for originality of invective, but an A+ for impassioned delivery. (May not be OK to play too loudly at work.)

Hello, my name is Steven Thrasher and I sent my Canon laptop computer to you. I just got it back – everything I’ve written on it for the past 2 years is gone.

Ah yes… I first hear this about a year ago, when my brother worked for Dell. You can imagine that a recording like this would be legendary in helpdek circles. My favorite aspect is the gradual loss of control over the course of the call. Bravo!

In a past life I did support for an internet company and after a big change with our services, well, we had TWO calls like this left on our voicemail come Monday morning. I felt for the guy but the two messages, with the rhythmic and repetitive language was just SO funny to listen to. And of course - he didn’t leave any info about himself - who he was, or his member name or how to contact him. Too funny. Thanks for the flashback.

Freaky.

I sent that link to my former manager and he sent me a copy of that voice mail. Has to be the same guy! LOL - funny how a string of expletives sounds pretty much the same no matter who the speaker. (or shouter as the case may be)

This is just so disturbing on so many levels for me. (I resisted listening to it for days—but now, while I avoid studying for a test, I decided to give it ago. I once worked in the complaint department of a large hated bureaucracy. My problem is that I can feel people’s pain—I’m not really cut out to listen to complaints. Okay…I’m going to listen to it just one more time. That’s it. Then I’ll stop.

At Dell,
As a general precaution on the people that for whatever reason have a return to depot contract, and there are folks out there…
We have them take out their hard drives before sending the system in, though sometimes they don’t listen. If the system is lost in transit, like DHL or UPS, there goes the data, if they send it, and the hard drive fails a diagnostic, the techs at the depot are obligated to call the customer to inform the hdd failure.
The customer would normally be given an option of keep the bad hdd and see if they could get the data off through an app or a laptop IDE converter and slave it to a desktop. Normally, folks just go off to a hard drive data retrieval place instead. It may cost more, but as they don’t have clue #1 on backing up data, nevermind they could google “Windows XP data backup” and prolly find enough hits… Ignorance instead claims them.
Always backup your data. Simple and easy. Otherwise, chances are there is a bookstore near you and those WIndows for Dummies books have the backup procedure for ya.
As for poor Steven, I doubt the trouble would work, most service contracts have stipulations that thevendor is not responsible for the data on the drive. Data backups are always the responsibility of the customer.

You know how many times family and old friends have called/emailed me about this thing? If you are cursed to have a rare (in)famous name, I hope you’ll understand. FYI: it’s my understanding that this guy’s a theater major either in NYC or Denver, and lost a play he’d been working on for some time. On behalf of the other five or so Steven Thrashers I hear from, time to time, boy, it’s an amazingly crazy topic. The new “Steven Thrasher” friends I’ve made, however, have been amazing. Interestingly, none of us tolerate failure. How funny, but how sad the over-the-top response of this probable relative. All the best to you all.
