Unsurprisingly, everything was my fault. I’m using the extremely handy MTSanitize plug-in to limit what HTML can appear in comments, but I was trying to rebuild the site without actually calling this macro in the templates (OK, I’d forgotten to copy it over from the old version).
Could it be that having this macro in the plug-ins directory but not referencing it from templates causes problems with a rebuild? Seems unlikely, but everything’s working now. Probably just coincidence.
The 404s should be 404’d.

If you could send me a screenshot or two taken in IE6 I’d appreciate it. I actually did very little testing (!) so haven’t seen it in IE6 yet.
