Help! Installing MT Locally on OS X
Comments: 11
Update: I figured it out. Site and archive paths have to be specified using /Library/WebServer/Documents/[subDirectory] rather than any other method (e.g., “localhost” or your machine’s IP). Seems it’s no particular component’s fault, but a confluence of idiosyncrasies.
I’m trying to get MT up and running locally under Mac OS 10.2.1 and keep getting permissions errors which I just can’t figure out. I spent yesterday getting MySQL going (no problems at all) and doing a ‘clean’ install of MT 2.5. I then brought in a subset of the entries from Antipixel, populated the DB without incident, and looked ready to go. Except, that is, for
Permission denied at /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables/lib/MT/
FileMgr/Local.pm line 104
when trying to save a new entry. MT is trying to create a new directory at this point to archive the new entry, but it isn’t being allowed to. I’ve tried setting permissions on the relevant directories every way I can, but nothing changes.
If anyone has MT running locally under OS X, I’d love to hear from you. Post a comment or send mail to jeremy @ antipixel dot com.

Are you running it under the MySQL database option? I'd be interested in hearing what steps you followed to install the DBD::mysql and DBI modules.

You're going to love this:

Download the "Bundle-DBI.dmg" disk image, mount it, double-click the installer, choose the modules you want, wait a minute, and you're done!
These modules do NOT work with Perl 5.8 – you need to stick with the 5.6 version that ships with OS X (which I found out the hard way).

Apache Web-Serving with Mac OS X on Macdevcenter.com should help with this issue. Part 2 - specifically explains how to enable CGI with Apache/OS X. Worth the read.

Todd – I hadn't seen that. Thanks for the link. There's a really important security tip on that page that's worth paying attention to.
icb – That's a great series, isn't it. I came across it trying to figure things out and the section you mention was indeed helpful. I've bookmarked the whole thing to go back and read it all properly when I can.

I'm running an MT weblog on an OS X Server at http://www.claddaghring.org, with the Berkeley DB. For the moment, my host has not installed the Mysql modules (though I'll point them to the installer above).
Once they do, I'll write a tutorial about how to do it at my own weblogVictor

Jeremy,
Don't know how this entry to antipixel slipped past me, but count me among those running MT on OS X. It's the only way I would ever be able to test out my templates (some of which involve PHP and SSI) without losing my sanity. I don't use my powerbook as a webserver except for local development. Once nice feature about Apache is that it's very easy to set up virtual host. So, for testing purposes, I have my httpd.conf file set to run my local etherfarm site off of http://www.etherfarm.dev.
Running MT locally is very handy for making a lot of entries at once, which I can then import into the "live" MT at my host (as I'm currently doing with the new MT-driven eye section of my site).
In any case, your update makes it seem like you've got it under control, though you don't mention using a virtual host (which is a very convenient way to get around OS X's insistence that web documents need to be in /Library/WebServer/Documents/…I run all my local stuff out of ~/Sites. I have four virtual hosts running simultaneously, and it works like a charm. Give me a holler if you need or want more info.

Hi Jeremy,
We've written a tutorial on how to install Movable Type v2.6 on Apple's OS X v10.3 "Panther", over at our new website MacZealots.com.
You can find the entire tutorial / article at the following URL:
