House Week #1

A quick entry for House Week today. I wish the photo showed the weathered wood a bit better. I love that they’ve oriented this side of the house to the street, with it’s one shielded window highlighting the austerity of the façade rather than diminishing it at all.
The hose for the air conditioner running up the wall to the right of the window is either terrible or beautiful, depending on my mood. The way this house is situated and the way the trees have been planted around it means that you can’t get another view of it. This is all you see.
One thing we have to try to get around is that most houses have high walls around them, so getting a good look at them can be difficult. This is one case where that doesn’t seem to matter.

One of the things I miss most about the 990 is the swivel. The 5700 I’ve upgraded to has an articulating LCD, but it’s nowhere near as handy as the swivel lens on the 990 (the 5700’s screen swivels, but your hand’s orientation in respect to the lens remains the same).
How tall are the walls? The remote shutter release for the Nikon digicams is very handy, particularly in conjunction with the swivel lens. A fully extended tripod or monopod and a shutter release (or even the timer with some haste on the photographer’s part) could conquer walls up to 7 feet or more.
Out of curiosity, are tall walls a feature of Japanese houses in general or just in your neighborhood?
