Starry Night 4

Forgot to mention last week that Starry Night version 4 has been released. That version 3 isn’t OS X-native has been the only reason I’ve kept OS 9 (it runs just fine under Classic). Once the upgrade arrives, it may well be farewell OS 9 forever.

Starry Night is an amazing desktop astronomy app; so much fun to play around with (you can lose hours and hours to it). The Pro version can control various telescopes but seeing as how I don’t have a telescope, the Backyard version does just fine.

Many, many moons ago, I owned a copy of Redshift, a nifty little program that was similar to Starry Night, but cheaper (I don’t think the Backyard edition existed then). Being the astronomy geek I am, I used to play for hours. I’m sure there are many new features now. :)

Have you had any good night viewing in Japan?

Heather — I’m lucky to live in Kyodo (west part of Tokyo) which apparently is sort-of-famous for having way better than average visibility at night. Sure seems true to me, although I’m not sure why this is (I can’t think of a particular geographical distinction that would make it possible).

Now that the weather’s cooling down and there’s much less moisture in the atmosphere, night’s can be spectacular here (“spectacular” being a relative term when you live in such a light-sodden place as Tokyo, of course).

Get out of the city, though, and you can still get some wonderful views, so we haven’t quite smothered the stars yet I’m happy to report!

I was surprised when I saw the price of the new OS X-only versions of Starry night - seemed much higher than I remembered the pre-OS X versions being. Maybe I’m remembering wrong though.

After moving to Washington, DC, I missed (and still miss) the night sky. Only the very brightest object shine here, but thankfully I get my fill of the Milky Way when I go to Pennsylvania.

I just wish the world would adopt light-pollution laws.
