Starry Night Arrives
![]()
Just in time for the Leonids, my copy of Starry Night arrived today. The biggest changes are to the quality of the display (it runs fine if a little choppy on the Pismo, but the manual recommends a 32 MB OpenGL compatible graphics card for “maximum performance” although OpenGL is not required to run it) and the addition of options panes down the left-hand side of the screen. You’ll want to give the manual at least a quick glance to figure out the new ways to get things how you want them.
I bought the upgrade from version 3 but the package included another copy of the Starry Night Companion book as well as a second CD with a bunch of QuickTime movies on various aspects of astronomy (the narration is corny as hell but there are some very nice CG visualisations of various phenomena). Any worries you may have about Starry Night being a little overpriced immediately evaporate when you sit down in front of it. I’ve only spent an hour or two with it since I got home but this is one upgrade I wouldn’t miss for the world.
