Search Requests

The search function over on the right-hand side of the page seems to get a fair bit of action, and a lot of people end up here because of Google searches (I’m semi-authoritative for quite a few exceedingly trivial things, I’ll have you know). Being in a list making kind of mood this weekend, here are some random search requests from the last few weeks.

Additionally, there were numerous requests for single letters of the alphabet, the most popular being “a,” “b,” and “w.”

The number one search request bringing people to my site from google is “knickers + kylie minogue + holly valance.” Hmm… strange that so many people should be interested in underwear.

No offence offense, but you might be getting a lot of hits for “Toby McGuire” because his name is actually spelled “Tobey Maguire.” So, people searching for the wrong spelling are finding your site easily.

the number one search result for me is my name. I can only guess that most of the people on lists I belong too can’t figure out to click the link to my page at the end of my email and instead search for me on the web. ummmm, yeah. Another perennial search is for “Better than Bouillon” which I mentioned once in a post about making soup. And like poor Toby, I must have mis-spelled Boullion, hence the hits.

Ryan — Oh, that’s just me. Do you want me to stop?

Shane — Pretty funny. I didn’t even notice. Was I thinking of the baseball player? What a friend to illiterates I am.

Mary Beth — If we came up with our own spelling for everything then we could have this whole Google business sewn up!

Pardon the dumb question Jeremy, but if you are using MTsearch how do you get to see the log of searches?

I use Atomz search for the non-blog parts of my site. Whenever I look at the log of searches the general inteptitude of searchers makes me despair. This might be an indicator (‘metric’?) of the savvyness of the visitors to a site — the percentage of searches that are never going to produce useful results could be computed as a klutzness factor for the browsership.

Peter — Go to MT’s Main Menu and click “View Activity Log.” Search requests are listed there along with any authoring activity on your blog (or blogs).

Thank you Jeremy!

I know I’m digging up ancient history here, but the other day I posted about a search result list very much like yours that I had put together in October of ‘02. The most humorous search string was “free pictures of women peeing in urinals” which seems to have NO relevance to my site. But then the other day I got a hit from ask.com for “pictures of women peeing on themselves” a search at ask.com revealed I was #2 on the list for that search string! Why? Because I talked about the humorous string in october! And then, my talking about it again once again raised my ranking.

Now that i’ve talked about it HERE, YOUR ranking has gone up for the topic. Its an interesting recursive relationship started by simply talking about an odd topic. Anyway, I bet you could use more urination fetishists on your site.
