The “Finder”

An excellent summary from John Gruber of what’s wrong with the “Finder” in OS X. (Hint: the Finder is not actually the Finder.)

Why replace the greatest and most beloved application in the history of the Macintosh with an ill-conceived “file browser”?

If you care about Macs, read this article.

Being a Mac newbie (from the end of OS 8), and a “happy” Mac OS X (Jaguar) user, I found Mr. Gruber’s OS X Finder rant very informative and surprising. It just shows me how much more I need to learn about using Macs (read: it’s more than just learning the command keys and such). Perhaps for the majority of switchers and newbies (such as I), Mac OS X will seem like the most awesome OS out there, and not recognize many of the faults that actually exist within the system. I hope the Finder will find its place back in a future release of OS X, but in the meantime, isn’t it still better than using a PC?

This is one article that should be shouted from a great height. In mentioning the alterations beyond the UI of X. It seems quite much has changed in the way it works and represents information. John makes some quite critical and deffinetly valid points. I wonder who let NeXT have such a “free say” on the developement of X? I don’t think its all bad though. Its important to note, even just for referencing -what has happened in this Case. But as Richie says- he still betters it over other OS which be it a small thing is still X’s saving grace. lets just hope the future developements become more refined instead of more ‘AQUA’ed. We all be watching……

I agree with the article. I have to admit I have never used any mac in my life but the classic finder sounds like a dream file system browser. “Spatial” is the way to go.

Apple should really look at getting the good things of the Classic UI especially from the point of usability back and in to OS X
