Shashin

PixelKitty is posting a photograph a day (or thereabouts) on Shashin. Judging from what’s there now, I’ll be making regular visits. Ever the sucker for a good pair of eyes.

I don’t know about anybody else, but the word “PixelKitty” in your post is missing its underline up to the first “t”.

I don’t know about you, but I’m anal about these things and if ithis happened with one of my designs I’d want to adjust the margin/padding/line-height.

I’m viewing your site using Mozilla 1.1 Win32 on WinXP.

Anything ‘Win’ says it all. In this case Win is an oxymoron. It’s not win, it’s ‘Lose’.

Ok, so I’m a Mac man.

Russ — Thought I’d fixed this, but Moz was still having trouble. I’ve bumped up the leading a little more but I doubt it can go any further: any more and the paragraphs tend to start looking pretty airy.

Given that I don’t usually have much to say, I rely on tighter leading to lend an air of substance to things around here. ;-)

Scott — Now now, we must be kind to those who have made less fortunate choices in life and help them see the error of their ways. Take a look at this site on a Mac, Russ: it will change your life!

Seriously though, I’ve really tried to get things looking consistent across browsers and platforms. Antipixel’s a personal site where I get to fool around with crazy ideas like making pixel-perfect layouts in CSS. It’s not saying a whole lot, but standards implementation has never been better across browsers than it is now. Remember when you had to make two (or more) versions of a site to accommodate different browsers and platforms? Even so, I doubt I’d recommend what I’m trying to do here to a client or anyone with a more serious set of requirements than I have.

Which is just by way of saying that things will break here from time to time or look less than stellar as I try to figure out how to keep everyone happy (myself most of all ;-) without having to create multiple versions of anything (style sheets included).

Nothing wrong with being anal retentive, but it’s important to unclench every once in a while.

Side note: Hmmm, I just spotted a typo in my last comment.

Scott, I’m actually a Mac fan at heart. My first computer was a Performa 475 back in 1994(!) I switched over to a Wintel platform because the high school I went to only had Wintel machines, and my 4Mb RAM Performa just wasn’t good enough to run an emulator without the spinning wheel of death. I still have my Performa 475 in my attic. It still works, but the hard disk has lots of bad clusters. I don’t know whether I should bin it, sell it on eBay, or keep it for sentimental value.

I’m actually looking to buy a laptop in the next year and I’ve been considering an iBook. When I’ve got the time I’ll be dual-booting Linux on my box and using that as my main platform, which is something I’ve been meaning to do for several years now. In case anybody knows, is there a flavour of Linux I can install on a Mac that has good hardware compatibility? (If there is I’ll definitely be buying an iMac.)

Jeremy, generally, what are your thoughts about Web standards when considering client requirements? Are you more inclined to implement backward compatibility? How far back do you go?

Re: anal retentive. Imagine what it would be like if every anal retentive person in the world unclenched at the same time. :-)

Russ — Re: your old Performa, you might want to check if there’s a recycling or charity agency in your area that can use it. Some companies collect old PCs, clean them up, and ship them off to less-fortunate countries where they get to live whole new lives.

PCs are incredibly filthy and dangerous things to throw away so any prolonging of life is worth investigating. (Yes, there’s the possibility that the country where it may end up has neither the legislation or expertise to ensure it’s finally dismantled in as ecologically sound a manner as possible: don’t have an answer for this one.)

Re: your new laptop, do try to make it an iBook if you can. They’re excellent value, tough as nails, and come with BSD Unix under the hood. I’m not running Linux myself but a very savvy friend who’s a Mac/Linux nut tells me that Yellow Dog is great.

As for client work, it all depends. There are still plenty of companies where Netscape 4 is the standard browser (Boeing for example, I believe) so ideally the version 4 browsers need to be accommodated. Then there’s the matter of hiding certain styles from older browsers (the @import trick), the box model hacks, the typographical issues and font-size keyword hacks and blah blah blah.

I would generally advocate not leaving version 4 browsers out in the cold, but not wasting development time and money trying to ensure they see a complete replica of what more capable browsers can display. I’ve noticed recently that patience seems to be wearing thin with the idea of way backwards compatibility, and more often version 4 browsers get written off.

Antipixel makes no concessions to Netscape 4 at all. I made a decision early on that part of the purpose of the site was going to be to see how minimally it could be put together and that I was staying the hell away from the slippery slope of backwards compatibility. Needless to say I’ve deviated from that minimal line of thinking somewhat (‘features’ get added which complicate building and maintenance), but I’m still not doing anything to support older browsers. It’s one of those little luxuries one has with a personal site, and after years of kow-towing to clients and sub-standard user agents I’m going to enjoy it.

Jeremy — Cheers for the tips.

Re: giving my Performa to a recycling or charity agency. I don’t know if there are any in my area, but I’ll have a look around. Before I do eventually pass it on I’d like to get a recording of its startup sound. Oh, how I miss it. I haven’t been able to find any Web sites that provide recordings of startup sounds by Macs.

Re: Linux on a Mac. I’ll have a look into Yellow Dog. If it suits my current and future needs it’ll definitely increase the likelihood that I’ll buy a Mac laptop instead of a non-Mac one.

Whilst carrying out my yearly reformatting of my hard drive last summer I forgot to back-up an installer for Netscape 4.x. Now I’m unable to see how my designs look in such browers. I checked out Netscape’s site, but I wasn’t able to find the installers for anything previous to their latest version.

Are you more or less likely to choose divs over tables when implementing a design for a client?
