Accessorize Your iPod

Stopped by Sakuraya in Shinjuku this afternoon and saw this, um… accessory.

Purse snatchers go wild when they see the new Groove bag from Felicidade. The only link I could find is to an earlier model being sold for ¥10,800 on this Japanese page.

Just today, my trusty Rio 800 bit the dust. Now I want an iPod more than ever. While I don’t see myself accessorizing with the Groove bag, it did get me thinking about something along the same lines, but appropriate for both sexes.

I’m imagining a Prada-style, white jacket, with the iPod set in a breast pocket, facing outward and visible through a transparent, soft plastic window. Flexible speakers would be embedded in the shoulders, facing up towards the wearer’s ears. For more socially-appropriate listening, wireless earbuds would be used.

But, really, all I need is the iPod itself.

Speaking of wild accessories, can anyone suggest their favorite iPod case? I’ve heard very good things about the cases from XtremeMac.

Posted by red   2002.12.28, 06:43

nice. that reminds me of the snowboarding suit with a built-in mp3 player.

Posted by jh   2002.12.28, 11:16

I was in Sakuraya to buy a remote control for my original 5 GB iPod. Since attaching it, I realise that cable management is something I could really use in a jacket.

Oh, what times we live in — clothing with speakers and cable management options! What’s next? WiFi antennae in our lapels?

As for cases, I’m using the iGlove. Been very happy with it, the manufacturer offers excellent customer service, and it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

I myself have an incase folio case which I like very much. I’m short and having the iPod ride horizontally on my belt is a good thing.

On the other hand, in the Apple store where I work, we were all drooling over these the other day. I myself like the look of the creamsicle color:

I got my iPod case at WaterField Designs online store http://www.sfbags.com . Very nice construction and durable.

Posted by Lars   2002.12.28, 16:35

Joshua, the XtremeMac case is great - very sturdy and well-designed

What about the Tie-Pod? A tie, a ‘pod, and the coolest headphones you can buy. Heavy? Maybe. Groovy? Definitely.

Posted by Mary Beth   2003.01.01, 10:44

I”m hoping the Tie-Pod (and you should trademark that name instantly - RIGHT NOW) will finally give a measure of control to all the headset wires. hate them! they catch on things, slap against you while you walk yadda yadda yadda. Give us peace and quiet. And Tie-Pod

any support for listening ipod on my bike ???

Posted by Nosemonger   2003.01.07, 19:37

If I were making a jacket capable of having an ipod ‘installed’ in the breast pocket, I would use the neck-type speakers Radio Shack used to carry. The sound is transmitted ‘silently’ through your collarbone, and you get to hear what is going on around you.

I think they were called the “bonephone” or something.

Make them a removable attachment for hte jacket and people wouldn’t even know you had them on, or were listening to music…

Jeez - you lucky people have no fear of muggers….

Posted by ranunculus   2003.01.25, 05:06

I don’t know if I would need to advertise to the world my player of choice. Scott eVest (http://www.scottevest.com/) is a good idea with room for all your gadgets and cord management, I’d get one if it wasn’t so ‘members only’… though I heard those were back in style!

Posted by enoki   2003.01.25, 14:51

Admittedly, I might be a little more style-conscious than the average person (and I am a woman, after all) but I swear by the iSkin. I had tried the AquaJam and found it to slip off the iPod a bit but the iSkin lets the iPod shine through and protects it - the lip prevents slips. And then I slip it into a custom Emilio Pucci velvet case. Voila!

Posted by olly   2003.01.27, 21:42

i have a translucent iskin and I love it. it is the business. and it lets the beauty of the pod shine through.

Posted by Poppy   2003.03.24, 15:26

Where do you get an emilio pucci ipod case?

Posted by mouse   2003.04.06, 01:08

For your bike:

Posted by Benny B   2003.05.08, 22:07

Ever heard of Circuit? It´s a streetwear brand that makes jackets with integrated 2.52.50.3 cm mp3-players. The size of a button… The textiles are touch sensitive and there´s a fabric display on the sleeve. I´m stoked! They´re out by 2004 I think.

Posted by m   2003.05.17, 04:53

Also for your bike, look at the cases on marware.com, particularly the sports convertible case: http://www.marware.com/Convertible.html

Posted by M   2003.05.17, 04:54

Oh! and they have them for the new iPods too. I think they’re “Size 3”

Posted by Mary Beth   2003.05.18, 13:54

On a late and different note…. I just got a Griffin Technology “iTrip” - and it’s GREAT. Only works right now on the original style iPods because of how it fits around the headphone jack. It requires no batteries AND it puts software on your iPod to allow you to change the FM selection from a playlist of FM frequencies. It’s so much better than the other FM transmitter device I had. Wow. Makes me glad I have an “old” one just so I can use this! LOL

Posted by jh   2003.05.18, 21:10

Mary Beth —- The iTrip looks great. Glad to hear it’s working better than some of the other FM transmitters out there (I tried a couple that people at my old company had but wasn’t impressed at all: they were effectively useless). Looks like I might have to swing by PowerLab (my favourite Mac store here —- they always stock things like the iTrip early) and check it out in person.

Thanks Poppy and Kim for the link to get the pucci iPod case. I saw a photo of it in my Harpers Bazaar, but it didn’t say where you could purchase it. Finally, a stylish iPod case!!!

Posted by cynthia   2003.06.07, 15:42

Anyone out there know of an armband or hand band ipod sports case for running? Hate the belt clips.

Posted by luckybinks   2003.07.10, 07:46

I just got 2 of the Pucci iPod cases from Collette, Paris; they are really awesome-looking but the cutout on the front is in an odd place; not exactly placed for easy access to controls. I like it much better than the generic velcro-close case I’m using now, though; more practical AND stylish.

Posted by Paul   2003.07.29, 01:29

These guys have several armband cases that would be suitable for running. http://catalog.drbott.de/catalog.php?iPod2G

Posted by Sam   2004.02.10, 18:10

Exo all the way. Very well made.

Thought i’d give you all a heads up on the SmartWrap, a device ideally suited to managing iPod earphone cords that are too long. It makes adjusting earphone cord length easy and currently comes in 8 fun colours. For more details please go to the SmartWrap site.

Posted by   2004.04.06, 22:42

SmartWraps are alot simpler than other iPod Accessories but solve a real problem associated with iPod Headphones and iPod Earphones that are too long.

Posted by valerie   2004.04.09, 14:31

there is a velvet ipod case that i got, you never have to take the ipod out to charge it or anything…its always protected, has a plastic covering on the face and buttons are accessable, with a hard flip top cover over the face….it is soooo sweet…its not online yet (but it will be) you have to email them at munegodes@aol.com… . ask for a picture its so cool, i think it was like $45, but its worth it…

Hey, I’m glad I found this forum because u guys seem to know a lot about iPod cases, exactly what I’ve been going crazy trying to find. I just got the click-wheel model for xmas, and I’ve been wanting like a really cool case to go along with it. However, I want something to fit my style, so if you guys know of any sites containing any sort of indie/punkish cases for Pods I’d really appreciate it if you let me know about them! angelgfg@yahoo.com
