People often wear masks in the spring when hay fever caused by pollen becomes a problem, but this fellow is probably just wearing it because he has a cold and doesn’t want to pass it on to anyone.
The Japanese focus on group dynamics extends to acknowledging one’s role as a disease vector, too!

I’ve heard that folks in Japan often wear masks when they are sick out of courtesy for others.
