New Year’s Irresolutions
Knowing myself as well as I do, which is to say better than I would at times wish, I’ve long given up making New Year’s resolutions. This year, however, I thought I should have another go at it and resolve to undertake some small thing, something modest, which would Make Me a Better Person (the long-delayed journey of a thousand miles starting, as it does, with one step).
I resolved to answer my e-mail, where possible, as it arrived. I’m a lousy correspondent at the best of times – an admission of galling hypocrisy given how much I love hearing from people – and this simple knuckling down to an act of the most basic politeness would, it was hoped, lead to bigger and better things if not quite a whole new me.
I lasted two days (and there’s still plenty of mail unanswered from last year).
This of course is all by way of presenting a kind of gussied up sorry-to-keep-you-waiting post and to let you know that even as the years go rolling by, some things never change.
