It might be a little culturally naive of me to even suggest this, but my pet theory about why so many Japanese walk with their head bowed is illustrated pretty neatly by that photo.

Even I’ve started doing it.

Power lines are my least favorite societal blight. If only Nikola Tesla hadn’t been crushed by the Edison juggernaut like Netscape vs Microsoft, perhaps our landscapes wouldn’t be so damn ugly! And before anyone tells me Tesla pushed the alternating current methodology running through powerlines, read a biography on him for the full story.

Power lines are great! And having them out in the open makes them easy to service. No need to tear up the road with a jackhammer. And also you can see the manner in which the street is wired. We’ve got 3 transformers out in front of our house, and it’s nice to see where the power comes in, and how it’s connected, so we can see it and learn how it works. Also, Westinghouse was the one who did the alternating current, three phase power, etc., rather than Edison’s DC. I got some nice pictures of power lines in http://wearcam.org/3phasepoletransformers/index.htm

I suspect if power were transmitted wirelessly it might add to the background “noise” (there’s already enough 60Hz hum in the air).
