“The nerds of this world buy Baker” – Updike

A new book by Nicholson Baker is always a big deal around here, so I ordered A Box of Matches as soon as I was aware of its existence. My copy is probably somewhere over the Pacific Ocean right now.
Robot Wisdom points to a recent profile of Baker in The Guardian titled “Particular Obsessions which is somewhat superficial but worth a look.
Baker is one of the few novelists who make me gasp out loud or can stop me dead in my tracks with a sentence, utterly dumbfounded at how he did that. I’m insanely jealous of his powers of observation and description, and he’s also knee-thumpingly funny. Oh, how I hate him.

I have to add that to my wish list now! I love Nicholson Baker— I think “The Fermata” will not easily be surpassed as No. 1 on my all-time Top 10 book list. The only other author I have ever come across with a similar gift for language is Angela Carter. Have you tried her?
