Should I Be Tempted by the Devil?

Yesss … if the devil tempt you to do good.

I watched Richard III with Ian McKellen (who also co-wrote the screenplay with director Richard Loncraine) last night on DVD and was absolutely mesmerised. It’s just brilliant.

The supporting cast is wonderful (Annette Benning as Elisabeth! Who’d have thought?) and it’s supremely well designed and shot, but of course it’s McKellen’s show. He plays Richard with an infectious relish, but never lets it obscure the monstrosity of the man. (McKellen has an ‘official’ site here which isn’t very good – you’re better off just doing a Google search for him.)

The film’s full of remarkable little touches, including a grimly funny White Heat quotation of sorts at the end. Very highly recommended.

McKellen’s site isn’t much to look at, but the writing is his I think. check the “what’s new” section for his inimitable voice.
