Agatsuma U.S. Dates

Just in case you’re near any of the places below and you like Tsugaru jamisen (or admire virtuosity in general) and you didn’t see Paul’s comment and would be disappointed to miss the opportunity to hear a kind of music you wouldn’t ordinarily get to hear in Middletown or Towson, or even Boston or New York City for that matter, I’m posting the dates of Agatsuma Hiromitsu’s U.S. appearances below.

Jan 30 - Wesleyan College, Middletown, CT.
Feb. 4 - Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA.
Feb 6 & 7 - Japan Society, NYC
Feb. 9 - Towson University, Towson, MD.

Agatsuma’s second album was quite different from the first – much more techno, or is it house? – and hasn’t grabbed me at all yet. The first one though is wonderful.

Hi jh, thanks for the info (maybe he’ll make a special stop in Hawaii). My friend (who works at a record store) gave me a promo of Agatsuma’s “Beams” CD. I don’t own his first one yet, so I can’t compare it to the new one (which I like).

For those in the US who want to buy his music but don’t want to pay import prices, his “Beams” CD will be released domestically through Domo Records (www.domo.com) on January 28th. It’s also being sold through their website for USD 12.97! Unfortunately, I don’t see his debut album on the site. :(

The site also features a little bio of Agatsuma and the history of the Tsuagaru shamisen. On the Tsugaru shamisen, I should add that the original shamisen, or sanxian, originated from China and was first brought to Okinawa (or the Ryukyu Kingdom). In Okinawa, it’s called sanshin, and is similar to the sanxian in appearance, but it differs in sound and scale (the sanshin is shorter). From Okinawa it made its way to Amami-Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture and spread throughout mainland Japan.

Thanks for the info. I made it to the show at Wesleyan last night and it was awesome. The shamisen has such an interesting sound and the band has a great chemistry, which really shows. They did some folk music, some jams and a couple of rock rifts. I love hearing new bands. I am definately going to try to get my hands on their cds.

it’s Wesleyan University, not college.

I stumbled upon this artist by accident on Napster. He has me sprung! I may a bit late with this information, but he has 3 CD’s (BEAMS, BEYOND & ETERNAL SONGS) available to purchase on Napster for $9.95US each.
