Uni

The two characters above (うに – pronounced oo-nee) mean sea urchin. When found on the lid of a jar, like those above, they mean sea urchin eggs, in this case lightly salted with “alcohol” (I don’t know what kind exactly … the label says “ethyl alcohol” which is good enough for me).
A friend gave us this jar of uni and it’s one of my favourite tastes. This one is very good, although it’s not the creamy paté kind you usually find in sushi-ya. I had some on rice tonight and this one is a bit sharp, almost tangy, with a peppery roof to the taste and a hint of cream in the long smooth finish. (Any uni snobs out there?)
I’m thinking some of this would be perfect on a slice of musk melon (I’ve never tried it, but will), or rationed carefully into the waiting pit-wells of halved avocados with a drop or two of lime juice (likewise).

Ethyl alcohol is of course C-C-OH (with three and two hydrogens on each of the two carbons). The same kind of alcohol that you find in beer, wine, etc. Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing) is C-COH-C (last C bonded to middle C, H to fill out valence shell of carbons). “Dry gas” is C-C-C-OH.
