Howard Rheingold writes of this intersection in his latest book, Smart Mobs. Specifically, he's talking about text messaging.
Nice to see after my visit 20 years ago.

a narrow panorama of what I think is the same crossing

I like to walk in arcs, slow and steady, for the entire time the traffic lights are red. I have some video of this. I'll see if I can dig it up. Also, Shibuya crossing in the rain or snow is delightful as you look down upon all the colorful umbrellas (great view from the hotel/restaurant above the station).
Great photo, btw.

Grainy video on a snowy day during ohanami. (save target as.. instead of streaming. Thanks.)

Jeff — moving about 15 metres to the left of where I took that shot puts you in about the same position as a shot Ron Frike used in Baraka. You'd recognise the blue and red neon sign of the drugstore (visble at extreme right above) which has been there forever.
Haven't read Rheingold's book yet.
Steve — Yep, same crossing. I'm taking a look at your photos of Tokyo right now. Looks you like you had a good time. It's always good to read accounts by people who get as wide-eyed about the place as I still do.
Shoop — I'm dl'ing that video now. Thanks for the link.

By the way, I guess I should mention that I don't know if this is the most-photographed intersection in the world or not (although I certainly wasn't the only person standing there taking photographs that evening).
For the literal-minded, it probably is. I was thinking of the most-photographed barn in the world (from Don DeLillo's White Noise) when I posted it and couldn't resist the reference.

Funny you should say that, Jeremy. I was just thinking, "what this photo really needs is a barn!" ;)
