Ideal Client

I’m working on a project for a client at the moment that involves a small web site and logo design. We’d figured out what the site would look like and then the necessity of a logo change was introduced because of the way the organisation is expanding this year.

I showed them a single idea for the new logo that, while honouring the brief I was given, was something completely unexpected. I knew it was the right design for them — the trouble was would they know it? They did, and gave me one of those rare, wonderful “don’t change a thing” responses. They’ve been ideal clients to work for in a bunch of ways — relaxed, fun, respectful, demanding. I wish every client was like this.

Are you looking for a challenge? Just checking because I have clients I could trade with you…

You’re lucky. I’ve got a small company I’m currently working with and they want all of their top employees (roughly 6) to like the new website and logo that I’m supposed to make for them. Trouble is, they don’t know what they want, and every logo I’ve come up with, they don’t like. What’s worse is their lead sales guy had a friend design a logo he liked… and it looks like a children’s toy or something out of Super Mario Bros. Hardly the image one wants to have when they plan on moving out of small to medium business and into big business.

What have you done to deserve that kind of clients, that I haven’t done?

Hmm, maybe I have to die to cash in on my karma, it should be a sizable heap by now though, can I have some payoff in advance, please? God, Shiva, Allah, or whoever?

JMBR, Tomas —- Notice that “client” is in the singular here! This is not the usual way things play out. Just a lucky patch right now, I guess.

Hell, I could sure use the work if you have any you’d like to give away. This sounds kind of ominous though. ;-)

Sasha —- This is the worst kind of situation to be in. Of course, it’s important that everyone be happy with the results, but decision-making by committee is usually such a headache. And that whole “I’ve got a friend who could do a logo for us…” thing sets off alarm bells like you wouldn’t believe.

I once lost a job to a client’s nephew who had just picked up a copy of Dreamweaver and thought, hey, you know this web site stuff really ain’t so difficult!

The results, when finally launched, were every bit as professional as you’d expect. But hey, it’s not like it cost them anything, right?

ah clients…so few have a clue…for the freelancer they are mostly a cross to bear for the purpose of paying the rent…
